Plastic raw materials can also be divided into general-purpose plastics, engineering plastics, and special plastics, depending on their application.

Common plastics include PP, PVC, PE, PS, etc.; engineering plastics include ABS, PC, PMMA, POM, PA6, PA66, PET; and special plastics include various other types.

Engineering plastics are used as industrial parts or shell materials for industrial plastics; their strength, impact resistance, heat resistance, hardness, and aging resistance surpass those of general-purpose plastics.
Japanese industry defines them as "can be used as the structure and mechanical parts of high-performance plastics, heat resistance over 100 ℃, mainly used in industry".
Its properties include:
a. Thermal properties: high glass transition (Tg) and melting (Tm) temperatures, high heat deflection temperature (HDT), high long-term operating temperature (UL-746B), wide operating temperature range, and low coefficient of thermal expansion.
b. Mechanical properties: high strength, high modulus of elasticity, low creep, wear resistance, fatigue strength.
c. Others: chemical resistance, excellent electrical resistance, flame retardancy, weather resistance, good dimensional stability.
